Emily Dow Partridge Smith Young

Autobiographical

• “Emily D. Youngs Diary, Salt Lake Citty Utah Territory, Head House, Feb. 28th 1874 12th Ward,” (covers 1874–1899)
  • Text notes: Most every version we have found is the same 125-page typescript. It ends mid-sentence on p. 125 but loops back to p. 118. There are other gaps. There is a separate typescript by Emily Knepp that appears to have fewer typos—UofU has a section of this coresponding to pp. 52–99 of the 125-page version. Excerpts of the diary have circulated under two titles: “Incidents in the Life of Emily Partridge” (pp. 122–25) and “Written Expressly for My Children” (pp. 125, 118–20).
  • Identifying markers (125-page version): “Citty” with two t’s in title. First paragraph: “Today I am fifty years old. Can it be possible; ...” Last page ends mid-sentence: “She sought to annoy in various ways. She once proposed to a”. This picks up again on page 118.
  • Ben and Ruth Anne have 125-page version
  • LDSA has 125-page version on microfilm, also the “Incidents” excerpt, (also “What I Remember”—see below), all on MS 2845. Glosses by S. Dilworth Young.
  • BYU has 125-page version bound, Vault MSS 5
  • UofU has two versions, according to Ruth Anne, one a partial version of the 125-page version, the other a complete typescript with different pagination and differences of wording. Special Collections (ML) Ms 113. They also have a multi-page register that is detailed enough to serve as a brief history of Emily. The register notes that they have no original documents, and that the typescript they have, by Georgie Young Hardy Steed, was based on a typescript borrowed from Emily Young Knepp, S. Dilworth Young's sister, so almost certainly the 125-page version.
  • Transcript, courtesy of D'Anne Keys, based I think on UofU version. Note: D'Anne provided three separate transcripts, each of which has material missing from the others. WordPerfect files available on request. This combined version was created by comparing the versions electronically, without reference to the 125-page typescript or any printed version. Volunteer needed to reconcile and proofread.

  • Are these included in the typescript? They’re from the same period. We could use them for proofing if they are, and add them if they’re not.

• “Incidents in the Life of a Mormon Girl”
  • Text notes: Todd Compton says this is 187 pages, written in Dec. 1876 apparently, ends with marriage to Joseph Smith. Ben notes: Don’t confuse this with the excerpts from the dairy that have circulated as “Incidents in the Life of Emily Partridge.”
  • LDSA has the original MS 5220. Loose sheets, purple ink. 187 pages looks about right. There is a 55-page typescript in the same collection. The Church only recently created a microfilm; Ruth Ann Moesser had a photocopy made from this.
  • Ben Parkinson's daughter has been working on a typescript. This appears to be a draft of the Autobiography (below), including the same lengthy quotations from early letters related to the Missouri persecutions.

• "What I Remember," Compiled by Emily Dow Partirdge Young, Salt Lake City, Utah, April 7, 1884.
  • Text notes: This has text similar to “Autobiography” from Woman’s Exponent (see below) but more elaborate and personal in detail, and less polished (and more natural) in expression.
  • Identifying markers: 3rd paragraph begins “I remember once my sister Hariet was shut in the dark....”
  • LDSA MS 5718 (microfilm) has an 86-page holograph with gaps and also a 36-page transcript that fills in some of the gaps. Pages in holograph are not all from the same notebook.
  • LDSA MS 2845 has a different, 26 page transcript, author’s name name given as “Partirdge.” Ben has a copy. Markers: Last numbered page: “All hopes of relief from the General Government...(Times and Seasons page 1073.)” Next page begins “he secretly worked for the destruction of Joseph...” and ends “The man made no resistance.” Next and last page begins “But as a general thing...” and ends in paragraph 2 with “For although Joseph was often times an”. Note at bottom: “(Belongs somewhere in the beginning.” (Final parenthasis missing.)
