Youth is gay and buoyant,
      And joys seem lasting ever;
But time moves on with stately tread,
      And scatters daily oe’r our heads,
The frosts of chilly winter.

Youth is fair and sprightly,
      And craves but loves sweet token;
Yet age creeps on; the song is hushed;
      The fire departs; and hopes lie crushed
      Alas! How soon the ware1 is broken
